Biography

Blessed Zefirino Agostini, also known as Zephyrinus Agostini, was born on 24 September 1813 in Verona, Italy. He was the oldest son of Antonio Agostini, a physician, and Agela Frattini. However, tragedy struck the family when his father passed away while Zefirino was still very young.

Zefirino Agostini's early life experiences, combined with his deep faith, inspired him to pursue a vocation in the priesthood. He was ordained on 11 March 1837 and dedicated his life to serving God and his community.

For eight years, Blessed Zefirino served as a curate, youth minister, and catechist at Saint Nazarius church. His dedication and love for his parishioners were evident as he supported and guided them in their spiritual journeys.

In 1845, Father Agostini was assigned as a priest to a very poor parish. Here, he recognized the immense need for education and support, particularly for women and girls. In response, he established after-school programs for girls, religious instruction for mothers, and education initiatives for women.

Notably, Father Agostini initiated a fervent devotion to Saint Angela Merici among his female parishioners. Inspired by Saint Angela's example of dedication and service, he founded the Pious Union of Sisters Devoted to Saint Angela Merici. The Bishop Ricabona approved their rule in 1856, further solidifying the importance of their work.

On 2 November 1856, Father Zefirino Agostini opened the first charitable school for poor girls. This institution became the foundation for future endeavors in providing education and support to those in need.

As time went on, some of the local women who worked at the school chose to live a communal life. Seeing this desire, Father Agostini prepared the first rule for the community, which would eventually become known as the Ursulines. On 24 September 1869, the first twelve Ursulines made their profession, marking a significant milestone in the congregation's history.

Driven by a strong belief in the importance of education, Father Agostini continued his efforts to empower and support women. On 18 November 1869, he and the twelve Ursuline sisters founded the Congregation of Ursulines, Daughters of Mary Immaculate. Through their work, they aimed to uplift women and provide them with the tools they needed to fulfill their potential.

Blessed Zefirino Agostini dedicated his life to the service of others, particularly the marginalized and impoverished. He demonstrated boundless compassion, providing education, and fostering a sense of community among those he served. His selflessness and commitment to his calling were recognized and admired by those who knew him.

Blessed Zefirino Agostini passed away on 6 April 1896 in Verona, Italy, having lived a life dedicated to virtue and holiness. He was venerated on 22 January 1991 by Pope John Paul II, who declared the decree on his heroic virtues. On 25 October 1998, Pope John Paul II beatified him, acknowledging his exceptional life and contribution to the Church and society.

The biography of Blessed Zefirino Agostini is a testament to the transformative power of faith and the immense impact that one person can have in the lives of others. His legacy continues to inspire and guide those who strive to make a positive difference in the world.
