Feast Day: February 3
Our Lady of Suyapa, also known as La Morenita, Nuestra Señora de Suyapa, Our Lady of the Conception of Suyapa, The Dear Dark One, Virgen de Suyapa, or the Virgin of Suyapa, is a revered title and image of the Blessed Virgin Mary that holds great significance in Honduras. The statue of Our Lady of Suyapa is housed in the Basilica of Suyapa located in Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras. The origin of the statue of Our Lady of Suyapa remains a mystery as the sculptor and the exact date of its creation are unknown. However, the statue gained prominence when it was discovered by a humble farm worker on 3rd February 1747. This worker found the statue in a small recess near the Suyapa River while performing his daily duties on a Hacienda. Recognizing the divine nature of this discovery, he took the statue home and his family began to venerate it. In 1768, a miraculous healing was attributed to Our Lady of Suyapa, further enhancing the statue's reputation. This miraculous event generated a growing devotion among the faithful, leading to the construction of a chapel in 1777 specifically dedicated to the veneration of the statue. With the establishment of this chapel, public devotion to Our Lady of Suyapa became possible. Over the years, the statue of Our Lady of Suyapa has faced theft and destruction but has always been recovered. In 1936, the statue was stolen by a mentally ill woman who lived near the chapel. Fortunately, the statue was quickly located at her home and returned to the safekeeping of the Basilica. Then, on 1st September 1986, tragedy struck again when the statue was stolen a second time. The thief stripped it of its precious gold, silver, and jewels before abandoning it in a men's restroom of a restaurant in Tegucigalpa. Despite these adversities, the statue remains an enduring symbol of faith and resilience. The intercession of Our Lady of Suyapa has been credited with bringing about significant events in Honduran history. Following the outpouring of prayers to her during the Football War in 1969 between Honduras and El Salvador, the conflict ended swiftly. Many saw this outcome as a direct result of Mary's intervention under this particular title. The devotion and care of the statue of Our Lady of Suyapa is carried out by the Orden de los Caballeros de Suyapa, also known as the Order of the Knights of Suyapa. This group of men dedicates themselves to the preservation and safeguarding of the statue and its chapel. They accompany the statue during its annual tour around Honduras, particularly in February, promoting devotion and spreading the message of hope associated with Our Lady of Suyapa. In recognition of the profound significance of Our Lady of Suyapa in Honduran culture and spirituality, she was declared the patroness of Honduras in 1925 by Pope Pius XI. Additionally, the Order of the Knights of Suyapa is also placed under her patronage. Our Lady of Suyapa represents the loving and compassionate nature of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her image radiates grace and comfort, drawing countless devotees seeking solace, healing, and protection. The statue's journey of theft, recovery, and resilience stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the unwavering devotion of the Honduran people to their beloved Morenita, Our Lady of Suyapa.
