Biography

Our Lady of the Angels, also known as La Negrita or the Virgin de los Angeles, is a revered Catholic Marian image that holds great significance in the town of Cartago, Costa Rica. The image is only about three inches high and is carved in a simple fashion on dark stone. The statue depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary with a round, sweet face, slanted eyes, and a delicate mouth. She carries the Christ Child on her left arm. The faces of Mary and the Child are visible, while the rest of the statue is covered by a pleated cloak. The image is displayed in a large gold monstrance that surrounds and enhances its appearance. The story of Our Lady of the Angels begins on August 2, 1635, the feast of the Holy Angels, when a poor mestizo woman named Juana Pereira discovered the small image of the Virgin while searching for firewood near Cartago. Juana took the statue home with her, but to her surprise, it vanished from her house and reappeared at the same spot by the footpath where she had found it. This phenomenon repeated itself several times over, with the image being moved to homes and even the parish church before returning, seemingly on its own, to the original location. The locals interpreted these events as a sign from Our Lady, indicating her desire for a shrine to be built at the sacred site. In response, a shrine was constructed, which soon became a place of pilgrimage, particularly for the poor and outcast. The image of Our Lady of the Angels was solemnly crowned in 1926, marking the recognition of her importance and devotion by the Catholic Church. In 1935, Pope Pius XI elevated the shrine of Our Lady of the Angels to the status of a basilica, further emphasizing its significance in the Catholic faith. The original stone upon which the statue was found is housed in the basilica. Over the years, the stone has been gradually worn away by the loving touch of the pilgrims who visit the shrine. It is believed that a spring of water emerged from beneath the stone, and the water is said to possess healing properties, having brought solace and relief to the sick. Due to the remarkable events surrounding the discovery of the image, as well as the devotion and miracles associated with it, Our Lady of the Angels has become the patroness of various locations. She is the patroness of Bisenti and Cassano delle Murge in Italy, as well as Costa Rica and the diocese of Getafe, Spain. The feast day of Our Lady of the Angels is celebrated on August 2nd, commemorating the day when the image was initially found by Juana Pereira. On this day, thousands of pilgrims gather at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels in Cartago, expressing their deep devotion and seeking the intercession of the Mother of God. The story of Our Lady of the Angels stands as a testimony to the enduring power of faith and the profound impact that a small statue can have on the lives and spirituality of countless individuals. The image continues to be venerated and remains a source of solace, healing, and inspiration for all who turn to Our Lady of the Angels in their times of need.
