Feast Day: October 12
Death: September 1, 530
Pope Saint Felix IV, also known as Pope Felix III, was born in Samnium, Italy, and little is known about his early life, except that he was the son of Castorius. He was chosen as the 54th pope in the year 526 at the insistence of Theodoric, the king of the Goths. During his papacy, Pope Felix IV worked diligently to benefit the Church and secure its position under the support of Theodoric. He successfully obtained exemptions for clerics from civil law, ensuring their freedom to practice their religious duties without interference. Pope Felix IV also focused on preserving and establishing structures for use as churches. Under his leadership, many buildings were acquired and dedicated for the purpose of worship. This effort aimed to provide suitable venues for the growing Christian community in Rome. In addition to his administrative accomplishments, Pope Felix IV played a crucial role in opposing the theological heresy known as semi-Pelagianism. Semi-Pelagianism compromised the Church's teachings on grace and free will. To address this issue, Pope Felix IV wrote to settle Church teachings on these matters, reaffirming the primacy of God's grace and the necessity of free will in cooperation with it. He also approved the work of Saint Caesarius of Arles, who had written extensively on these theological topics. In his later years, Pope Felix IV sought to designate his successor. However, this proposal was met with resistance from both civil authorities and many cardinals, who rebelled against the idea. Despite this setback, Pope Felix IV remained steadfast in his commitment to the Church and its teachings until his death. Pope Saint Felix IV passed away in September 530 in Rome, Italy, due to natural causes. He was interred in the portico of Saint Peter’s Basilica, Rome, where his final resting place remains to this day. Pope Felix IV was recognized for his unwavering devotion to the Church and was canonized as a saint. Although he is not specifically associated with any patronage, his feast day is celebrated on October 12th in the Roman Martyrology and on September 22nd in Benevento, Italy. Prior to the standardization of feast days, his commemoration was held on January 30th. In summary, Pope Saint Felix IV was a determined leader who served the Church during a crucial period of its history. Through his efforts, he secured important exemptions and structures for the Church, defended the true teachings on grace and free will, and worked tirelessly for the benefit of the Christian community. His memory continues to be honored within the Catholic Church as a great defender of the faith and a model of steadfast devotion.
