Feast Day: July 30
Saint Abdon, also known as Abdo or Abdus, was a devout Catholic who lived during the 3rd century in Persia. Not much is known about his early life, but history tells us that he played a significant role in aiding and befriending Christians who were being persecuted under the reign of Emperor Diocletian. Alongside his dear friend Saint Senen, Abdon demonstrated unwavering courage and compassion by collecting the remains of martyred Christians in order to provide them with a proper and respectful burial. Their noble act was driven by a deep sense of solidarity and a desire to honor those who had sacrificed their lives for their faith. Unfortunately, the Roman authorities discovered Abdon and Senen's efforts, which eventually led to their capture. To punish them for their defiance, they were subjected to severe torture as a means to coerce them into renouncing their faith. Despite the immense pain they endured, they remained steadfast in their convictions and refused to renounce their belief in Jesus Christ. As a result of their unwavering faith, both Abdon and Senen were sentenced to death. It is believed that they were executed around the year 250 in Rome, Italy. Following their martyrdom, Abdon's remains were interred in the Benedictine Abbey of Sainte Marie in Arles, France. Through the centuries, devotion to Saint Abdon grew among the faithful due to his sacrifice and dedication to the Christian cause. Although there are no specific representations attributed to him, his memory lives on through his patronage of various causes. Saint Abdon is revered as a patron saint against eye diseases and vermin, demonstrating his special intercessory role for those suffering from such afflictions. Additionally, he is recognized as a patron of barrel makers, bucket makers, coopers, and gardeners. It is said that his influence extends even to blind children, who can seek his intercession for healing and guidance. Although Saint Abdon and his companion Saint Senen were canonized before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, they continue to be venerated as holy martyrs within the Catholic Church. Their feast day is celebrated on July 30th, a day that serves as a reminder of their unwavering faith and dedication to serving God. We honor the memory of Saint Abdon, admiring his selfless devotion and courage in the face of persecution. His life remains an inspiration for all those who seek to serve God and stand up for their beliefs, even in the most challenging times.
