Biography

Saint Adalbald of Ostrevant, also known as Adalbald d'Ostrevant, Adalbald of Douai, Adalbaldus, Albold, Adelbald, Adalbade, and Adalbaud, was born into the noble family of Flanders in Belgium. He was the son of Saint Gertrude the Elder and held the title of Duke of Douai, France. Adalbald served in the royal courts of King Dagobert I and King Clovis II, where he distinguished himself with his military prowess and loyalty. During his time in the court, he came to be known for his courageous and just nature. While on a military campaign to suppress a rebellion in Gascony, Adalbald met Saint Rictrude of Marchiennes, the daughter of Ernold. Despite opposition from her family, who disapproved of his military incursions in their region, Adalbald and Rictrude fell in love and decided to marry. Together, they had four children who later became saints themselves: Saint Maurontius of Douai, Saint Clotsindis of Marchiennes, Saint Eusebia of Hamage, and Saint Adalsindis. Adalbald and Rictrude were devoted to each other and the Christian faith, dedicating themselves and their fortunes to religious projects and the care of the poor. They became known for their piety, humility, and works of charity. Tragically, Adalbald's life was cut short by a violent act of treachery. While on the road to Gascony, an in-law, resentful of Adalbald's military activities and fearing his influence, mercilessly murdered him. Many sources consider Adalbald a martyr due to the circumstances surrounding his death. Following his murder, miracles were reported at Adalbald's tomb, indicating his holiness and intercession with God. His relics are venerated in several locations, including Saint Amand les Eaux, Elanone, and Douai in France. Although Saint Adalbald of Ostrevant was not formally canonized by the Church, his reputation for sanctity and the enduring devotion of the faithful earned him a place as a saint in the Pre-Congregation era. Saint Adalbald is revered as the patron saint of parents of large families, as his own children became saints, and his example of faith, love, and humility can serve as an inspiration for those who face opposition or struggles within their own families. His feast days are celebrated on 2 February, with some calendars recognizing 4 February as well, and also on 2 May, which marks the translation of his relics to Douai. On these occasions, the faithful honor and remember the life and martyrdom of Saint Adalbald of Ostrevant, seeking his intercession and following his example of virtuous living.
