Biography

Saint Agabus The Prophet, also known as Agabo or Agabos, was a Jewish convert and one of the 72 disciples sent out by Jesus to preach the gospel. Born in Antioch, he had a significant role in the early Christian community and made notable prophecies. Agabus was blessed with the gift of prophecy, which enabled him to foresee future events with great accuracy. One such remarkable prediction was his prophesy of a wide-reaching famine that would affect the entire Roman Empire. This famine, foretold by Agabus, came to pass in the year 49 and had severe consequences throughout the region. Additionally, Agabus is believed to be the prophet who accurately predicted the imprisonment of the apostle Paul in Jerusalem. This prophesy is recorded in the Book of Acts, specifically in Acts 21:10. It was through Agabus's insight that Paul and his companions were warned of the impending danger, giving them the opportunity to prepare mentally and spiritually for the challenges ahead. Saint Agabus is often depicted in art as a Carmelite holding a church, symbolizing his role as a preacher and messenger of God's word. He is also seen making a prophecy, highlighting his gift of foresight, and often accompanied by a dove, representing the Holy Spirit and divine inspiration. Having lived in the 1st century, Agabus passed away in Antioch, his birthplace and a prominent center of early Christianity. Although he is recognized as a saint, Agabus was canonized before the formal creation of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, thus falling under the category of Pre-Congregation saints. Saint Agabus is honored on several feast days. His primary feast day is celebrated on April 8th, while some calendars also commemorate him on March 8th according to the Greek calendar. Additionally, February 13th is recognized as his feast day on certain calendars. Although Saint Agabus is not widely known as a patron saint of any specific cause or group, his life and contributions serve as an inspiration to all believers. His unwavering faith and the accuracy of his prophecies are a testament to the power of God working through him. By faithfully proclaiming the gospel and sharing his prophetic insights, Agabus played a significant role in strengthening the early Christian community and spreading the message of Christ.
