Biography

Saint Alonso De Orozco Mena, also known as Alfonso de Orozco or Alphonsus de Orozco, was born on 17 October 1500 in Oropesa, Toledo, Spain. He was the son of the governor of a castle and grew up in a privileged household. As a young boy, Alonso studied at Talavera de la Reina and developed a passion for music. He served as a choir boy in the cathedral of Toledo for three years, honing his musical talents. At the age of 14, Alonso enrolled at the University of Salamanca in Spain, where he continued his studies. However, his strong desire for God's calling led him to join the Augustinians in his early 20s. Alonso was a spiritual student of Saint Thomas of Villanova, a renowned Augustinian friar. He was ordained as a priest in 1527 and soon gained a reputation as a powerful and influential preacher. His sermons were known for their eloquence, wisdom, and ability to touch the hearts of the listeners. In his early years as an Augustinian, Alonso served as a prior in Seville, Spain. However, due to severe arthritis, he was unable to continue his missionary work in Mexico and was sent back to Spain. Despite this setback, he remained dedicated to serving God and the people. In 1554, Alonso became the prior of the convent in Valladolid, Spain, a position he held with great humility and devotion. He had a profound impact on the community, dedicating his free time to visiting the sick in hospitals, comforting prisoners in jail, and assisting the poor on the streets. Alonso's door was always open to anyone seeking spiritual guidance or help. Not only was Alonso a gifted preacher, but he was also an accomplished writer. He authored several works in Spanish and Latin, including histories of the Augustinians. His writings demonstrated his deep understanding of theology and spirituality and served as a source of inspiration for many. Saint Alonso De Orozco Mena had a profound devotion to the Virgin Mary, whom he considered as a mother and a guide in his spiritual journey. He also played a significant role in founding Augustinian monasteries and convents and worked tirelessly to advance reforms within the Order. Alonso's exemplary life of service and humility gained him much admiration and respect. He won the hearts of the people, who valued his selflessness and dedication to the Gospel. This love and veneration led to his official recognition by the Catholic Church. On 19 September 1591, Alonso De Orozco Mena passed away at the College of the Incarnation in Madrid, Spain, peacefully succumbing to natural causes. At his funeral, the people of Madrid stormed the College, hoping to find relics of their beloved pastor. He was interred in the Augustinian church in Valladolid, Spain, where his memory continued to inspire and guide the faithful. His reputation for holiness led to the veneration of Saint Alonso De Orozco Mena on 15 August 1732 by Pope Clement XII. Later, he was beatified on 15 January 1882 by Pope Leo XIII and canonized on 19 May 2002 by Pope John Paul II. While he does not have a specific patronage assigned to him, Saint Alonso De Orozco Mena remains a shining example of humility, selflessness, and unwavering dedication to God and His people.
