Biography

Saint Andreas Chong Hwagyong, also known as Andeurea Jeong Hwa-Gyeong and Andrea Tyong Hwa-Gyong, was born in 1808 in Cheongsan, Chungcheong-do, South Korea. He lived during a time of intense Christian persecution in Korea and is remembered as a layman catechist in the apostolic vicariate of Korea. Saint Andreas Chong Hwagyong was a devoted Catholic who had a deep love for his faith and a strong desire to share it with others. He worked closely with another martyr, Saint Lawrence Imbert, serving as his assistant. Together, they strived to spread the teachings of Jesus Christ despite the dangers they faced. During the time of their ministry, Christians in Korea were subjected to brutal persecutions, initiated by the Joseon Dynasty government. In the face of this persecution, Saint Andreas Chong Hwagyong turned his home into a sanctuary for Christians seeking refuge. His home became a safe-house, providing shelter and spiritual support to those hiding from the officials. Saint Andreas Chong Hwagyong's actions did not go unnoticed by the authorities. He was eventually discovered and arrested for his involvement in sheltering and assisting Christians facing persecution. Despite being aware of the consequences of his actions, he remained resolute in his faith and committed to helping others. On 23 January 1840, Saint Andreas Chong Hwagyong was strangled to death in prison in Seoul, South Korea. He endured torture and imprisonment with unwavering faith until the very end. His martyrdom was a testament to his love for Christ and his refusal to renounce his beliefs, even in the face of extreme suffering. Saint Andreas Chong Hwagyong was venerated by Pope Pius XI on 9 May 1925, when the pope issued a decree of martyrdom honoring his sacrifice. On 5 July 1925, Pope Pius XI beatified him, recognizing his virtuous life and martyrdom. Finally, on 6 May 1984, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Andreas Chong Hwagyong as a saint of the Catholic Church, celebrating his exemplary faith and dedication. Although Saint Andreas Chong Hwagyong does not have an officially recognized patronage, he serves as an inspiration for all those facing religious persecution and those who strive to live their faith boldly and compassionately. Saint Andreas Chong Hwagyong's feast days are celebrated on 23 January and 20 September, commemorating his martyrdom and recognizing him as one of the Martyrs of Korea. His life and sacrifice continue to be honored by the Catholic faithful, serving as a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the courage to stand firm in one's beliefs.
