Biography

Saint Anthony Mary Gianelli, also known as Antony Gianelli, was born on 12 April 1789 in Cerreto, Italy. He was the son of Mary and James Gianelli, and he grew up in a humble, devout family in a small farming village. His mother, known for her piety, taught catechism, while his father was renowned for his generosity and peacemaking skills in their town. Anthony displayed exceptional promise as a student, and his intellect and dedication caught the attention of the owner of his family farm. Recognizing his potential, the farm owner generously sponsored Anthony's seminary education. On 24 May 1812, at a remarkably young age, Anthony was ordained a priest. Such was his potential that he required a special dispensation for his ordination, which was granted due to his exceptional qualities. During his early years, Anthony served as a parish priest, diligently ministering to the faithful. In 1826, he was appointed Archpriest of Chiavari, Italy, where he continued to demonstrate his dedication to serving others. A year later, in 1827, Anthony founded the Missionaries of Saint Alphonsus, a men's missionary congregation committed to spreading the Gospel. This congregation remained active until 1856. A year after founding the Missionaries of Saint Alphonsus, Anthony established the Oblates of Saint Alphonsus in 1828. This religious congregation, which lasted until 1848, focused on serving the Church and engaging in charitable work. Anthony's desire to care for the sick and educate the younger generation led to the founding of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Garden in 1829. This women's teaching order, dedicated to the education of young girls and providing assistance to the sick, continues its vital work to this day across Europe, the United States, and Asia. In 1837, Anthony was appointed Bishop of Bobbio, Italy. As bishop, he organized the Society of Saint Raphael and the Society of Saint Dorothea to instruct and guide the faithful in his diocese. He also sought to revive devotion to Saint Columbanus in his area. Anthony conducted two synods during his time as bishop, and his pastoral dedication led him to travel tirelessly from parish to parish, ensuring that he personally cared for his flock. Tragically, Saint Anthony Mary Gianelli passed away on 7 June 1846 due to a severe fever. However, his exemplary life and virtues did not go unnoticed. On 11 April 1920, Pope Benedict XV recognized his heroic virtues, proclaiming him venerable. Then, on 19 April 1925, Pope Pius XI beatified him, and finally, on 21 October 1951, Pope Pius XII canonized him. Saint Anthony Mary Gianelli is now honored as a patron of Bobbio, Italy, a title bestowed on him on 7 December 1963 by Pope Paul VI. He is also revered as a patron of the Missionaries of Saint Alphonsus, the Oblates of Saint Alphonsus, and the Sisters of Our Lady of the Garden. His life and work continue to inspire countless individuals to follow the path of faith, service, and dedication to the Church.
