Saint Anthony The Roman, also known as Anthony of Rome, was born in 1086 in Rome, Italy, during a tumultuous period known as the Great Schism, which divided the Catholic Church. Raised in a deeply religious family, Anthony's allegiance remained with the Orthodox Church. At a young age, Anthony started to feel a calling to a life of asceticism and holiness. He gave away all his possessions and chose to become a hermit monk. Seeking solitude and communion with God, Anthony found a rock surrounded by the sea and made it his dwelling. However, one day, the rock on which Anthony resided unexpectedly broke loose and began to float across the waters. Eventually, it landed in the city of Novgorod in Rus, modern-day Russia. When Archbishop Nikita heard of this incredible event, he recognized Anthony's sanctity and warmly welcomed him. Archbishop Nikita provided assistance to Anthony, helping him build a church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This sanctuary became a spiritual haven, attracting curious pilgrims, scholars, and seekers of wisdom. Anthony's reputation as a holy man and a miracle worker quickly spread, leading to the establishment of a monastery around the church. Under Anthony's guidance, this monastery flourished, becoming a center of spiritual learning and discipline. As the abbot of the monastery, Anthony led a life intertwined with prayer, study, and service to others. He diligently taught the aspiring monks and provided spiritual guidance to those who sought his counsel.
