Biography

Saint Arduinus of Rimini, also known as Arduino, was a spiritual student of Venerio, a revered figure in the Catholic Church. Arduinus was born in Rimini, Italy, and dedicated his life to the service of God from an early age. He showed great devotion and piety, becoming an exemplar of the faith. Arduinus had a strong desire to become a priest, and he sought ordination from Bishop Uberto. However, it is noted that he had to pay a fee to Uberto in order to be ordained, a practice that was not uncommon in those days. Though Arduinus made this concession to the worldly ways of his time, he always remained dedicated to his priestly duties and fought against the corruption that sometimes plagued the Church. As a priest in Rimini, Arduinus served as the rector of the church of San Gregorio. Despite the challenges and temptations of the world, he remained steadfast in his commitment to God and served his parishioners with great care and compassion. Arduinus was known for his exceptional devotion to celebrating Mass, a rarity during that time and location. He celebrated the Eucharist daily, recognizing its significance as the central act of worship in the Catholic faith. Arduinus was also renowned for his charitable nature. He embraced the concept of complete poverty for himself, giving away his possessions to help those in need. He took to heart the teachings of Jesus, who called upon his followers to love their neighbors as themselves. Arduinus lived out this commandment, tirelessly assisting the poor and marginalized in his community. At one point, Arduinus and Venerio made the decision to retire from the worldly life and live as hermits in the church of San Apollinare in Classe, Ravenna, Italy. There, they devoted their days to prayer and contemplation, deepening their spiritual connection with God. Still, Arduinus continued to celebrate Mass daily, even in their isolated hermitage. In his later years, Arduinus resided in the San Gudenzio monastery, where he continued to assist and learn from Venerio, who served as the abbot of the house. Despite his dedication and contributions, Arduinus never took any vows as a monk. His focus remained on serving God and following his calling as a priest, rather than seeking any formal monastic commitment. Saint Arduinus died in 1009 of natural causes. His life serves as a testament to the power of faith, devotion, and selflessness. Arduinus exemplifies the ideals of the Catholic Church, showing profound love for God and a genuine concern for the well-being of others. His feast day is celebrated on August 15th.
