Feast Day: April 14
Saint Benezet, also known as Benezet of Hermillon, Benedict, Bennet, Benet, or Benoit, was born around the year 1163 in Hermillon, Savoy, France. He is famously known as "The Bridge Builder" due to his remarkable feat of constructing a bridge over the Rhone River in Avignon, guided by a heavenly vision. Benezet began his life as a shepherd, tending to his flock near Avignon. It was during a solar eclipse when he received a divine vision. In this extraordinary encounter, Benezet was instructed to build a bridge across the Rhone at Avignon. The heavenly message assured him that angels would watch over his flock while he undertook this monumental task. Inspired by this vision, Benezet eagerly approached the church and civil authorities in Avignon seeking their support and assistance for the construction of the bridge. However, both religious and secular officials dismissed his plan, considering it an impossibility. Refusing to be discouraged, Benezet took matters into his own hands. Legend has it that Benezet lifted an enormous stone into place on the riverbank and proclaimed it would be the foundation of the bridge. To the amazement of all present, eighteen miracles occurred that day, affirming the divine endorsement of his mission. Witnessing these extraordinary events, the church and civil officials retracted their skepticism and pledged their support. With newfound backing, Benezet began the construction of the bridge in 1177. He formed brotherhoods of bridge builders, attracting fellow believers to join him in this holy endeavor. From humble beginnings, the Saint persevered tirelessly, leading the construction efforts and inspiring his fellow workers. The bridge, known as the Pont Saint-Benezet, gradually took shape thanks to Benezet's perseverance and divine guidance. Completed in 1184, the bridge connected Avignon with Villeneuve-lès-Avignon on the opposite bank of the Rhone. It became a crucial link for trade and communication in the region, further solidifying Benezet's legacy. Saint Benezet's reputation as a miracle worker spread far and wide. Countless stories were shared about his ability to heal the sick and aid those in need. He was beloved by the people of Avignon, who regarded him as a symbol of their faith and resilience. Benezet passed away in 1184, having witnessed the completion of the bridge that would forever bear his name. His body, discovered incorrupt in 1669, served as a testament to his sanctity. In recognition of his remarkable achievements and the good works associated with his name, Benezet was canonized as a Saint. Today, Saint Benezet is venerated as the patron saint of Avignon, bachelors, and bridge builders. His representation often depicts a young boy carrying a large stone on his shoulder, symbolizing his dedication and determination in overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The feast day of Saint Benezet, the Bridge Builder, is celebrated on April 14th, a day in which the faithful honor his remarkable life and extraordinary contributions to society. His story serves as an inspiration to all, reminding us of the power of faith, vision, and perseverance in transforming dreams into realities.
