Feast Day: February 3

Biography

Saint Berlindis of Meerbeke, also known as Bellaude or Berlinda, was born into a noble family in the early 8th century. She was the daughter of Odolard, the Duke of Lothringia, and Nona. Notably, she was the niece of Saint Amand of Maastricht, a prominent figure in the early Christian Church. Berlindis grew up in a pious household and was deeply devoted to her faith from an early age. However, tragedy struck when her father, Odolard, contracted leprosy. As his condition worsened, Berlindis struggled to cope with the physical and emotional toll it took on her family. One anecdote from her life recounts how she refused to drink from the same glass as her ailing father, as she feared contracting the disease herself. This act of self-preservation led to her ailing father's disownment of her. Following her father's rejection, Berlindis sought solace and purpose in religious life. She entered the Benedictine convent of Saint Mary in Moorsel, Belgium. There, she embraced a life of prayer, contemplation, and dedication to the service of God. Her time in the convent was marked by a profound sense of humility and devotion to her fellow sisters. After a period at Saint Mary's convent, Berlindis felt a calling to pursue a more solitary and contemplative form of religious life. She elected to become an anchoress and withdrew to a small cell in Meerbeke, Belgium. As an anchoress, she lived in isolation, devoting herself to prayer, meditation, and self-mortification. Throughout her life, Berlindis demonstrated an unwavering commitment to her spiritual journey. Her deep faith and unwavering dedication to a life of virtue made her an inspiration to those around her. She lived a life of simplicity, embracing poverty and self-denial as a means of drawing closer to God. Saint Berlindis passed away in the year 702 of natural causes, having lived a life of remarkable piety and devotion. While her representation is not specifically mentioned, her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who recognize her sanctity. Although Saint Berlindis was never officially designated as a patron saint, her example of devotion and perseverance can serve as an inspiration to those facing challenging circumstances or struggling with their faith. Her feast day is celebrated on the 3rd of February each year. While Saint Berlindis of Meerbeke has not been officially canonized by the Catholic Church, she is recognized as a saint in the pre-congregation era. Her memory continues to be venerated as a shining example of holiness, dedication, and unwavering faith.
