Biography

Saint Bonifacia Rodriguez Castro was born on June 6, 1837, in Salamanca, Spain. She came from a devout Catholic family, being one of six children born to Joseph Rodríguez Gutiérrez, a tailor, and Maria Natalia Jiménez Castro. At the tender age of four days old, she received the Sacrament of Baptism. As a young girl, Bonifacia exhibited a deep piety and love for the Catholic faith. She had a strong devotion to Mary Immaculate and Saint Joseph and attended daily Mass. Bonifacia's faith led her to gather like-minded individuals who shared her devotion, and together they formed a group that met regularly in her home for prayers and devotions. This group eventually became known as the Association of the Immaculate and Saint Joseph, although it is more commonly called the Josephine Congregation. At the age of fifteen, Bonifacia began working in a rope factory, a laborious job that offered minimal pay. Despite the difficulties she faced, she remained committed to her faith and continued to lead a holy life. Bonifacia's work experiences deeply affected her, especially witnessing the difficult lives of poor women. Inspired by the Holy Family's example, where Jesus, Mary, and Joseph earned their livelihood through honest work, Bonifacia and her companions founded the Congregation of the Servants of Saint Joseph on January 10, 1874. The mission of the Congregation was to assist and support poor women, preventing them from falling into lives of crime or abuse. They sought to provide these women with practical skills and spiritual formation, following the path illuminated by Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The Congregation grew rapidly under Bonifacia's leadership, with many dedicated women joining their cause. Saint Bonifacia Rodriguez Castro lived a life of humble service and selflessness. She worked tirelessly to uplift and empower women, ensuring they had the means to live dignified lives. Her dedication to the service of others and her unwavering faith inspired many, and her congregation continued to thrive and expand. Saint Bonifacia passed away on August 9, 1905, in Zamora, Spain, at the age of 68. Her death was a result of natural causes. She was interred at the motherhouse of the Siervas de San Jose in Salamanca, Spain, the congregation she had played a crucial role in establishing. Recognizing her exemplary life, Pope John Paul II declared her venerable on July 1, 2000, acknowledging her heroic virtues. Later, on November 9, 2003, Pope John Paul II beatified her in a ceremony that recognized her as Blessed Bonifacia Rodriguez Castro. Finally, on October 23, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI canonized Bonifacia Rodriguez Castro as a saint. The canonization celebration took place in Saint Peter's Square, Rome, Italy, honoring her for her remarkable life and the immense contribution she made to the Church and society. While Saint Bonifacia Rodriguez Castro does not have a known patronage associated with her, her life continues to inspire many, especially those who are committed to the betterment of women's lives and the promotion of dignified work. Her legacy lives on through the Congregation of the Servants of Saint Joseph, who carry on her work of compassion and service to this day.
