Feast Day: February 25
Saint Caesarius of Nazianzus was born around 329 in Arianzus, a region in Cappadocia. He was the son of the revered Saint Gregory of Nazianzen the Elder and Saint Nonna. Caesarius grew up in a deeply religious family, with his siblings being Saint Gorgonia and Saint Gregory of Nazianzen, who later became Archbishop of Constantinople. Caesarius received a comprehensive education, studying in Caesarea, Cappadocia, and Alexandria, Egypt. During his studies, he developed a keen interest in medicine and became particularly skilled in this field. His medical expertise, combined with his kind heart and devotion to helping others, earned him a reputation as an exceptional physician. Around the year 355, Caesarius relocated to Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire. There, he established a flourishing medical practice and became quite wealthy in his profession. However, his success did not deter him from his faith. In fact, his devotion to Catholicism only grew stronger amidst the temptations of the imperial court. During his time in Constantinople, Caesarius served in the court of Emperor Julian the Apostate, who actively sought to revive paganism and undermine Christianity. Julian, aware of Caesarius' unwavering faith, attempted to coerce him into renouncing his Christian beliefs. Undeterred by the emperor's threats, Caesarius bravely refused, choosing to stand firm in his faith. As a consequence for his defiance, Caesarius was exiled from Constantinople. He found refuge in Bithynia, where he was taken into the service of Emperor Valens as a quaestor. Despite his elevated status and the temptations that came with it, Caesarius remained committed to his religious vows, opting to live a life of asceticism and self-denial. Throughout his life, Caesarius had numerous offers to enter into marriage with individuals of high social standing. However, he chose the life of a confirmed bachelor, devoting himself entirely to the service of God and others. His selflessness and compassion for the poor were renowned, and upon his passing in approximately 369, Caesarius generously bequeathed his entire estate to help those in need. Saint Caesarius of Nazianzus, though not officially canonized by the Church due to pre-congregation times, remains highly venerated for his dedicated Christian life and unwavering commitment to his faith. His feast day is celebrated on February 25th. He is considered a patron saint of bachelors, serving as an inspiration to those called to a single and devoted life, guided by faith and selflessness.
