Biography

Saint Carolina Santocanale, also known as Sister Maria of Jesus, was born on 2 October 1852 in Palermo, Italy. She was born into a noble family, belonging to the barons of Celsa Reale near Palermo. Carolina was baptized just three days after her birth and later received a good education. At the age of eight, Carolina made her first Communion, which deepened her faith and relationship with Jesus. As she grew older, she began to feel a calling to religious life, despite being pursued by multiple suitors. This inner call to dedicate her life to God became stronger and more persistent, prompting her to consider the contemplative cloister as well as serving the sick, poor, disabled, and abandoned in her community of Palermo. Carolina sought spiritual guidance from Father Mauro Venuti, who became her mentor and teacher. At the age of 21, she demonstrated her leadership abilities by leading the Daughters of Mary in the parish of San Antonio Abate in Palermo. However, her longing for a life of contemplation and her desire to serve the marginalized and suffering in her community left her torn between two paths. In her quest to merge the contemplative and active aspects of religious life, Carolina decided to become a Franciscan tertiary. She embraced her new religious vocation, taking the name Sister Maria di Gesù. However, this decision was met with strong opposition from her family, who disapproved of her choice. Undeterred by her family's objections, Sister Maria di Gesù, along with like-minded tertiaries, started a remarkable mission in poor neighborhoods. Wearing a backpack filled with supplies, she went door to door, assisting the sick and feeding the poor. Her selfless acts of charity and compassion earned her the respect and admiration of many. Motivated by her deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and her desire to make a lasting impact on society, Sister Maria di Gesù founded the Capuchin Sisters of the Immaculate of Lourdes on 24 January 1923. This religious congregation was established to continue her work of serving the needy and spreading Christ's love to those most in need. Even to this day, the Capuchin Sisters of the Immaculate of Lourdes carry on her inspiring mission. Saint Carolina Santocanale passed away on 27 January 1923 in Cinisi, Palermo, Italy, due to natural causes. Her extraordinary holiness and dedication to God and humanity were acknowledged by Pope John Paul II, who declared her venerable on 1 July 2000, recognizing her heroic virtues. Later, on 12 June 2016, Pope Francis beatified her, and the beatification ceremony took place in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Nuova, Monreale, Italy, presided by Cardinal Angelo Amato. Finally, on 15 May 2022, Pope Francis canonized Saint Carolina Santocanale, officially recognizing her as a saint of the Catholic Church. Her life serves as an inspiration to all believers, reminding them of the transformative power of selfless love, dedication to God, and service to the disadvantaged. Although she does not have a specific patronage, her example of compassion and charity can inspire individuals from all walks of life.
