Saint Crispin of Viterbo, also known as Crispinus of Viterbo, was born as Pietro Fioretti on 13 November 1668 in Viterbo, Italy. His father passed away when Pietro was very young, and his mother consecrated him to the Blessed Virgin Mary when he was just five years old. Pietro developed a deep devotion to the Virgin Mary and referred to her as his "other mother." His simple and honest piety earned him the nickname "il Santorello" or "the little saint" from his neighbors. As Pietro grew older, he worked as a shoemaker under the guidance of his uncle, who also provided for his education. However, everything changed when Pietro witnessed a procession of the Friars Minor Capuchin. This experience ignited a calling within him for religious life, and on 22 July 1693, he entered the Capuchin Order as a lay brother, taking the name Crispin due to his profession as a shoemaker. Crispin began his religious journey by working as a cook in the Capuchin monastery in Viterbo. Later, he was transferred to various Capuchin houses in Tolfa, Rome, and Albano Laziale, where he tirelessly served his fellow friars. Throughout his life, Crispin admired and sought to emulate the holiness of Saint Felix of Cantalice. Crispin's humble and sincere devotion attracted many lay people who sought his spiritual guidance. As word of his wisdom spread, people from all walks of life, including priests, bishops, cardinals, and even a pope, came to seek his counsel. Despite his visitors' high ranks and social status, Crispin treated everyone equally, recognizing them all as children of the same God. Crispin was renowned for his miraculous abilities, such as healing through touch and prophesying. His exemplary life and virtues led Pope Pius VI to declare his heroic virtues on 7 July 1796. Later, on 7 September 1806, Pope Pius VII beatified him. Finally, on 20 June 1982, Crispin was canonized by Pope John Paul II, making him the first saint canonized by him. Saint Crispin of Viterbo passed away from pneumonia on 19 May 1750 at the friary of the Immaculate Conception on the Via Veneto in Rome, Italy. His body was found incorrupt in 1959 and is entombed beneath a side altar in the Capuchin church in Rome. Today, Saint Crispin of Viterbo is venerated for his deep piety, humility, and miraculous acts. His life serves as an inspiration for all to treat others with kindness and love, regardless of their social status or position. Although he is not associated with a particular patronage, his intercession is sought by many who seek spiritual guidance, healing, or assistance in their daily lives.
