Biography

Saint Cristobal of Tlaxcala, also known as Christopher or Cristobalito, was born around 1514-1515 in Atlihuetzía, Tlaxcala, Mexico. He was the son of a pagan tribal chief, growing up in a region where Christianity was a relatively new religious presence. Despite his upbringing, Cristobal was drawn to the teachings of Christianity and converted to the faith. Cristobalito's conversion led him to seek further knowledge and education in the Christian faith. He attended the first Franciscan school in Tlaxcala, where he learned about the teachings of Jesus Christ and the principles of the Catholic Church. His fervor and dedication to his new faith steadily grew. Unfortunately, Cristobal's commitment to Christianity brought him into conflict with his father and the tribal leaders. They viewed his conversion as a betrayal of their traditional religious beliefs and attempted to force him to renounce his newfound faith. However, Cristobal remained steadfast in his convictions and refused to deny Christ. As a result, he was subjected to severe beatings and persecution at the hands of his own family. Despite the physical torment, Cristobal never wavered in his faith and continued to profess his love and devotion to Jesus Christ. Tragically, the persecution against Cristobal reached its devastating climax when his father ordered for him to be martyred. In the year 1527, he was burned to death in Tizatlán, Tlaxcala, Mexico, for his unwavering commitment to Christianity. His martyrdom was a powerful testament to his faith and the incredible strength he demonstrated even in the face of persecution. Saint Cristobal of Tlaxcala, along with two other young individuals who were martyred for their faith in the same region, is known as one of the Three Child Martyrs of Tlaxcala. Their collective martyrdom serves as an inspiration and reminder of the courage and devotion exhibited by young believers in the face of adversity. The recognition of Saint Cristobal's martyrdom came on 3 March 1990 when Pope John Paul II issued a decree acknowledging his heroic death. Subsequently, on 6 May 1990, Pope John Paul II beatified him, acknowledging his valiant sacrifice for the Christian faith. Finally, on 15 October 2017, Pope Francis canonized Saint Cristobal of Tlaxcala, officially recognizing him as a saint of the Catholic Church. The canonization recognition ceremony was held at Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, Italy, and was presided over by Pope Francis himself. Saint Cristobal of Tlaxcala is a symbol of unwavering commitment, bravery, and faith in the face of extreme adversity. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire and serve as a testament to the power of faith in Christ. Although he does not have a specific patronage, he remains an encouraging example for all believers, especially those facing persecution for their religious convictions.
