Saint Dominic De La Calzada, also known as Dominic of the Causeway, Dominic of Landeveien, Dominico, or Dominicus, was born in Victoria, Biscay, Spain. He felt a strong calling to religious life and initially attempted to join the Benedictines at Valvanera, but his request was declined. Undeterred by this setback, Dominic decided to become a hermit at Rioja, Spain. At that time, his hermitage was located in what is now known as the shrine La Calzada. As an ardent believer in serving God through helping others, Dominic embarked on a mission to ease the journey for pilgrims traveling to Compostela in Spain. With the assistance of Saint John de Ortega, Dominic painstakingly built a causeway, bridge, and hospice solely by hand, providing much-needed respite and support to the weary travelers. His selfless act of constructing these infrastructure facilities allowed pilgrims to overcome obstacles in their path, making their journey more manageable and comfortable. The location of his former hermitage in La Calzada quickly gained recognition as a place of pilgrimage in its own right. People from afar flocked to this sacred site to seek solace, guidance, and healing. Dominic became renowned for his deep devotion to God and his unwavering commitment to serving others. He exemplified the true essence of selflessness, compassion, and faith. Saint Dominic De La Calzada is often depicted in various representations that symbolize different aspects of his life and mission. These representations commonly include a hen and rooster, which are said to have miraculously come back to life after being cooked and eaten by unjust pilgrims who had treated Dominic poorly.
