Biography

Saint Drostan, also known as Drostán mac Coscreig of Deer or Drostan of Deer, was born into the Scottish royalty as the son of Cosgrach in the 6th century. He received a thorough education under the guidance of the renowned Saint Columba. After completing his studies, Drostan embarked on a journey with Saint Columba to Aberdeen, Scotland. During this time, he devoted himself to spreading the teachings of Christianity and played a significant role in the conversion of the Picts in northeast Scotland. Drostan's missionary work and spiritual gifts were highly regarded among the people. As a result, he was appointed as the first abbot of the monastery at Deer in Pictland, where he led a community of Benedictine monks. Later, he also served as the abbot of Dercongal Abbey in Holywood. Throughout his ministry, Drostan's profound spirituality attracted many poor and sick individuals seeking solace and healing. Numerous miracles were attributed to him, demonstrating his reputation for sanctity and divine favor. The sick and suffering found comfort and relief in his presence. After years of tireless service, Saint Drostan eventually retired to live as a prayerful hermit in the peaceful surroundings of Glenesk. Here, he dedicated himself to a life of contemplation and fervent prayer, seeking a deeper connection with God. Saint Drostan's commitment to his spiritual journey and his unparalleled devotion to the faith made him a revered figure in Scotland. His remains were preserved and venerated in Aberdeen, where they became objects of pilgrimage for the faithful. Recognizing his outstanding virtues, Saint Drostan was eventually canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church, although the exact details of this process are not available due to his pre-congregation status. His feast days are celebrated on July 11th and December 15th, as listed in the Aberdeen Breviary. Today, Saint Drostan is considered the patron saint of Deer, Scotland, a testament to his profound impact on the region.
