Biography

Saint Edgar The Peaceful, also known as Eadgar the Peaceful, Edgar the Peaceable, Edgar I, or Edgar of England, was born a prince in the year 943 or 944 in Wessex, England. He was the son of King Edmund I and Saint Elgiva of Shaftesbury, a devoutly religious family. In 957, Edgar ascended to the throne as the King of the Mercians and Northumbrians, and on 1 October 959, he became the King of the West Saxons, effectively making him the ruler of all England. Despite his military actions, Edgar's reign was known as a period of peace and prosperity for the civilian population, earning him the epithets "The Peaceful" and "The Peaceable." One of Saint Edgar's remarkable qualities was his exceptional efficiency as a ruler whilst maintaining a high level of tolerance for local customs. He was deeply devoted to the welfare of his people, ensuring a period of stability and tranquility for England. Edgar had strong alliances with several prominent religious figures of his time. He supported his close friend, Saint Dunstan, the Archbishop of Canterbury, in his efforts to establish abbeys across the country. Furthermore, he also offered his assistance to Archbishop Oswald of York and Bishop Aethelwold of Winchester in their endeavors to found religious communities. Edgar played a crucial role in promoting the Benedictine movement, emphasizing the importance of monastic life and its positive impact on society. As a pious ruler, Edgar enacted penalties for those who failed to pay their tithes and Peter's pence, demonstrating his commitment to upholding the obligations of the faithful. By enforcing these financial responsibilities, he ensured the continued support for the church and its charitable activities. Saint Edgar was also known for being a devoted family man. He was the father of Saint Edward the Martyr, whom he instilled with the same virtues and religious upbringing that were dear to his heart. Together, father and son formed a legacy of faith and righteousness. After a prosperous and peaceful reign, Saint Edgar The Peaceful passed away on 8 July 975 in Winchester, Wessex, England. His immense contributions to the development and stability of England earned him great veneration by the people. Though he was canonized as a saint in the Pre-Congregation era, his feast day is celebrated on 8 July. Given his renowned ability to govern, his commitment to the church, and his lasting impact on the peace and prosperity of England, Saint Edgar The Peaceful is revered as a patron saint of kings and widowers. His life serves as an inspiring example of a ruler who strove for harmony and justice in a time of political turmoil.
