Biography

Saint Eulogius of Tarragona, also known as Eulogius of Tarragona, was a deacon in Tarragona, Spain, during the third century. He is revered as a martyr and is closely associated with his companions, Saint Fructuosus and Saint Augurius. Together, they played prominent roles in spreading and strengthening the Christian faith in their region. During this time, Emperor Valerian implemented a series of brutal persecutions against Christians. The Roman governor of the province, Emilian, was tasked with enforcing these persecutions in Tarragona. Eulogius, along with Fructuosus and Augurius, remained steadfast in their commitment to their faith despite the dangers that faced them. In the year 259, Eulogius, Fructuosus, and Augurius were arrested by Emilian for openly professing their Christianity. They were subsequently imprisoned and subjected to various forms of torture in an attempt to force them to renounce their beliefs. Despite the severity of their torments, they refused to waver in their faith. The renowned theologian and philosopher, Saint Augustine of Hippo, wrote in praise of the steadfastness and exceptional courage displayed by these martyrs. They were brought before the Roman officials and given one last chance to renounce their Christian beliefs. On January 21, 259, in the city of Tarragona, Eulogius and his companions were sentenced to death. Their chosen method of execution was a particularly agonizing one - they were burned at the stake.
