Biography

Saint Francesco Spinelli, also known as Francesco Maria Spinelli, was born on 14 April 1853 in Milan, Italy. From a young age, Francesco showed a great passion for the arts, particularly puppetry, and would organize puppet shows for other children in his community. Alongside his mother, he dedicated himself to helping the poor and sick in their city, displaying a deep sense of compassion and service to others. Francesco's dedication to his faith led him to pursue his studies in Bergamo, Italy, where he eventually became ordained as a priest in 1875. Later that same year, while in Rome to celebrate the Jubilee, he had a profound vision. In this vision, Francesco witnessed women continuously adoring the Blessed Sacrament, further solidifying his devotion to the Eucharist. Returning to Bergamo, Francesco began teaching at the seminary during the day while running an evening school for the underprivileged in his parish. His commitment to education and social welfare was admirable, but it was in 1882 that he truly realized the fulfillment of his vision. On 15 December of that year, he played a significant role in the foundation of the Sisters Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament in Bergamo. The Sisters Adorers of the Blessed Sacrament dedicated themselves to the adoration of Christ in the Eucharist and the care of the poor. Their mission aligned perfectly with Francesco's vision, and he became instrumental in guiding the Sisters on their path of selfless service. This new community flourished under Francesco's guidance, attracting women who shared his love for the Eucharist and desire to help those in need. In recognition of his dedication to the Church and his remarkable service to others, Francesco was transferred to the diocese of Cremona, Italy, on 4 April 1889. There, the Sisters Adorers continued their vital work, adoring Christ in the Eucharist and providing care for the impoverished. Saint Francesco Spinelli passed away on 6 February 1913 in Rivolta d'Adda, Cremona, Italy, from natural causes. It was clear that through his life and actions, he had imprinted a lasting legacy on the Church and those he cared for. His profound spirituality, commitment to the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and his tireless dedication to helping the poor left an indelible mark on the lives of those who knew him. Pope John Paul II recognized the heroic virtues of Saint Francesco Spinelli on 3 March 1990, marking his official veneration. On 21 June 1992, the Holy Father beatified him at the Marian Shrine of Caravaggio. Finally, on 14 October 2018, Pope Francis declared his canonization during a ceremony at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Italy. Although there is no specific patronage assigned to Saint Francesco Spinelli, his life and work serve as an inspirational example of devotion, service, and commitment to the Eucharist. His story continues to inspire countless individuals to lead lives of faith, compassion, and selfless service to others.
