Biography

Saint Francisco Marto, also known as Franz Marto, was one of the child visionaries who witnessed the apparition of Our Lady of Fatima in 1917 in Portugal. He was born on 11 June 1908 in the small village of Aljustrel, Portugal. Along with his sister Jacinta and cousin Lucia dos Santos, Francisco experienced a series of supernatural encounters with the Virgin Mary between May and October 1917. These apparitions, known as the Fatima apparitions, had a profound impact on the lives of the three children and later gained international attention. During the apparitions, Our Lady entrusted the children with three secrets, which were later revealed to be predictions of future events and calls for prayer, penance, and conversion. The experiences deeply influenced Francisco's spiritual life and led him to develop a profound love for God and the salvation of souls. Francisco suffered greatly from the intensity of the visions and the mystical experiences that accompanied them. Following the apparitions, he intensely embraced a life of penance and reparation. Recognizing the immeasurable value of sacrifices for the conversion of sinners, he willingly offered up small acts of mortification and prayer for this purpose. Unfortunately, Francisco's life was cut short by illness. On 4 April 1919, at the age of ten, he succumbed to influenza in his hometown, Aljustrel, Portugal. His passing was marked by great sorrow among the local community and religious devotees who had come to know of his extraordinary spiritual journey. In recognition of Francisco's exceptional holiness, his relics were translated to the basilica at Cova da Iria on 13 March 1952. The relics serve as a powerful reminder of his devotion to God and the significance of the Fatima apparitions. Francisco's cause for beatification began in 1946, and on 13 May 2000, he was beatified by Pope John Paul II alongside his sister Jacinta. Finally, on 13 May 2017, he was canonized as a saint by Pope Francis. His canonization not only affirmed the authenticity of the Marian apparitions but also recognized the heroic virtues displayed by Francisco during his brief but meaningful life. Although Saint Francisco Marto does not have any specific patronages assigned to him, he is venerated as a model of childlike faith, humility, and holiness for all Catholics, especially children and young people. His remarkable life continues to inspire and encourage believers to live a life of profound devotion to God and to seek the conversion of sinners through prayer and sacrifice.
