Biography

Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, also known as Francesco Possenti, was born on 1 March 1838 in Assisi, Italy. He was one of thirteen children in a devout Catholic family. In his youth, Gabriel was drawn towards worldly pursuits, attending the theater, indulging in frivolous activities, and engaging in the chase for women. However, his life took a transformative turn when he was called by Our Lady to join the Passionist Order. Inspired by his profound encounter with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Gabriel abandoned his former way of life and entered the Passionist novitiate. He made his profession on 22 September 1857, dedicating himself to a life of prayer, sacrifice, and devotion to Our Lady. Gabriel deeply immersed himself in the contemplation of the sorrows suffered by Mary during Jesus' Passion. Throughout his life, Gabriel did not experience significant events or controversies, but rather immersed himself in the simplicity of a contemplative life. Despite his short existence, he left an enduring spiritual impact on those who knew him and those influenced by his example. Numerous miracles were attributed to him after his death, including the miraculous cure of Saint Gemma Galgani when she fervently prayed for his intervention. Pope Benedict XV recognized Gabriel's exceptional virtues and offered him as a model for young people. His humble and devout life demonstrated the potential for profound conversion and spiritual growth, even in the face of worldly temptations. Gabriel's commitment to prayer and his deep love for Our Lady became a source of inspiration and guidance for Catholics worldwide. Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows passed away on 27 February 1862 at the age of 23 due to tuberculosis. Although he lived a relatively short life, his faith and devotion to God and the Blessed Virgin Mary continue to inspire and influence countless individuals seeking a deeper and more meaningful relationship with God. On 14 May 1905, Pope Pius X declared Gabriel venerable. Later, on 31 May 1908, he was beatified by the same pope. Finally, on 13 May 1920, Pope Benedict XV canonized Gabriel, recognizing him as a saint of the Catholic Church. Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows is venerated as the patron saint of Abruzzi, Italy, which was proclaimed by Pope Paul VI on 1 June 1964. Additionally, he is also regarded as the patron saint of Catholic Action, clerics, students, and young people in general. His intercession is sought by those seeking strength, purity, and the ability to overcome worldly temptations. Although Saint Gabriel's representation is not specifically mentioned, he is often depicted in religious art wearing the habit of the Passionist Order, reflecting his dedication to a life of penance and contemplation.
