Biography

Saint Gerald of Aurillac, also known as Geraud, was born in 855 in the town of Aurillac, France. He belonged to the noble family of Count Gerard and Saint Adeltrude of Aurillac. Unfortunately, Gerald suffered from various illnesses during his youth, which eventually led to him becoming blind. After the death of his father, Gerald inherited the title of Count of Aurillac. However, he made a remarkable decision that would shape the rest of his life. Overwhelmed by a deep desire to dedicate himself to God and serve others, he gave away all his possessions and embraced a life of poverty. Despite not joining a religious order or house, Gerald lived a life of chastity and devoted himself to prayer and contemplation. He would recite the Divine Office daily, seeking communion with God through his words and actions. As a testament to his love for God and his devotion, Gerald built a church and abbey on his own property in Aurillac. Saint Gerald of Aurillac lived during a time when the Church was not yet organized into formal religious congregations. Consequently, his canonization occurred prior to the establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Thus, he is considered a pre-congregational saint. Gerald's life was marked by his unwavering faith and commitment to helping others. He had a special concern for those who were suffering physically and mentally. Recognizing his own disabilities, he empathized with the challenges faced by disabled and physically challenged individuals. Consequently, he became their devoted patron saint. Furthermore, Gerald is also venerated as the patron saint of bachelors, counts, and the regions of Aurillac and Upper Auvergne in France. His impact as a spiritual guide and intercessor continues to inspire and provide solace to countless individuals in need. After a life of faithful service, Saint Gerald passed away on October 13, 909, at Cenezac, France. His remains were laid to rest in the abbey he built in Aurillac, where countless pilgrims continue to seek his intercession and find spiritual comfort.
