Saint Giovanni Antonio Farina, also known as Johannes Antonius Farina, was born on 11 January 1803 in Gambellara, Vincenza province, Italy. He was the son of Pedro and Francisca Bellame. From a young age, Giovanni Antonio showed a deep love for God and a desire to serve Him. He entered the seminary in Vicenza, Italy, where he studied diligently and excelled in his academic pursuits. Even while still a student, he began teaching at the seminary and proved to be a dedicated and inspiring teacher. On 15 January 1827, Giovanni Antonio Farina was ordained as a Catholic priest. With his ordination, he embarked on a life of service to the Church and the community. He had a profound passion for education and a desire to help the poor. In 1836, he founded the Institute of the Sisters Teachers of Saint Dorothy, also known as the Daughters of the Sacred Heart. This religious congregation was dedicated to the noble cause of teaching the poor and spreading the love of God through education. Giovanni Antonio Farina's contribution to education was highly regarded, and he was appointed as the bishop of Treviso, Italy, on 20 September 1850. As a bishop, he continued to advocate for education and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the less fortunate. One of the notable events in Bishop Farina's life was his ordination of the future Pope Saint Pius X on 18 September 1858. This act reflects his commitment to nurturing and guiding future leaders of the Church. After serving as the Bishop of Treviso, Giovanni Antonio Farina was appointed as the Bishop of Vicenza on 28 September 1860. He held this position until his death. Unfortunately, on 4 March 1888, Saint Giovanni Antonio Farina suffered a stroke and passed away in Vicenza, Italy. In recognition of his exemplary life and virtues, Pope John Paul II declared Giovanni Antonio Farina as venerable on 24 April 2001. On 4 November 2001, he was beatified by the same pope. Finally, on 23 November 2014, Pope Francis canonized him as a saint, affirming his holiness and the impact he had made on the Church and the world.
