Biography

Saint Giuse Lê Dang Thi, also known as Joseph Thi, was a layman who led a remarkable life as a soldier, convert, and martyr. Born around 1825 in Ke Van, Quang Tri, Vietnam, not much is known about his early life and upbringing. However, it was during his time serving as a Captain in the army of King Tu-duc that he would encounter a profound religious transformation that would eventually lead him to give up his life for his faith. Despite his military duties, Giuse Lê Dang Thi felt a deep spiritual calling and began to explore the Catholic faith. In the face of societal pressure and potential persecution, he made the brave decision to convert to Catholicism. This act of faith would have significant consequences but also bind him to a higher purpose. As a fervent Catholic, Giuse Lê Dang Thi remained steadfast in his beliefs, even as religious persecution against Catholics in Vietnam increased. During this time, Catholics faced immense challenges and were subject to oppression and violence. Despite all odds, Giuse Lê Dang Thi stayed committed to his newfound faith and served as a steadfast witness to the love and teachings of Jesus Christ. Tragically, Giuse Lê Dang Thi's unwavering faith would ultimately lead to his martyrdom. On 25 October 1860, he was captured by authorities and mercilessly strangled to death at An Hòa, Quang Nam, Vietnam. His martyrdom was a testament to his commitment to the Catholic faith and his refusal to renounce his beliefs, even in the face of extreme persecution. In recognition of his heroic sacrifice, Giuse Lê Dang Thi was venerated by Pope Pius X on 2 August 1908, who issued a decree of his martyrdom. Just a year later, on 2 May 1909, Pope Pius X beatified him, acknowledging his sanctity and the example he set through his life and death. Finally, on 19 June 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized him, officially recognizing him as a Catholic saint. Saint Giuse Lê Dang Thi remains an inspiration to people of faith around the world, especially those facing religious persecution. His life serves as a reminder of the courage and unwavering commitment to one's beliefs, even in the most challenging of circumstances. Although not recognized as a patron saint for any specific cause, his story continues to inspire and encourage those who strive to live out their faith with conviction and dedication.
