Saint Gregory of Ostia, also known as Gregorius IV, Gregorio Ostiense, Gregorio di Ostia, or Gregorio de la Berrueza, was a Benedictine monk and priest who served as the Abbot of the monastery of Saints Cosma e Damiano ad Micam auream in Rome, Italy. He was known for his holiness, wisdom, and reported miracles, particularly in saving crops from pests. As a result, he is venerated throughout the regions of Navarre and Rioja. Born in an unknown date and place, Saint Gregory of Ostia dedicated his life to the service of God as a member of the Benedictine order. He possessed a deep spirituality and a strong devotion to the Church, which eventually led to his appointment as the Cardinal-Bishop of Ostia, Italy, and Vatican librarian in approximately 1034 by Pope Benedict IX. In addition to his responsibilities in Rome, Saint Gregory of Ostia served as a papal legate to the kingdoms of Spanish Navarre and Old Castile. His role as a papal representative allowed him to spread the teachings of the Church and foster stronger ties between these regions and the Holy See. He fulfilled this role with unwavering dedication, striving to promote unity and faith among the people he encountered. Saint Gregory of Ostia's reputation as a miracle worker grew throughout his life. He was especially known for his ability to protect crops from pests, a crucial concern in agricultural communities.
