Biography

Saint Humilis of Bisignano, also known as Luca Antonio Pirozzo or Umile of Bisignano, was a Franciscan lay-brother who became renowned for his sanctity. He was born on August 26, 1582, in Bisignano, Cosenza, Italy. From a young age, it was clear that Humilis had a special reverence for God and a desire to serve Him. At the age of 18, Humilis entered the Order of Friars Minor, taking his vows as a lay-brother. He dedicated himself to a life of prayer, humility, and selflessness, faithfully fulfilling his duties within the Franciscan community. Despite his lack of formal education, Humilis possessed a great wisdom and understanding of the spiritual life, which attracted many to seek his counsel. Humilis's reputation for holiness spread far and wide, reaching the ears of the popes of his time. Pope Gregory XV and Pope Urban VIII recognized his spiritual greatness and summoned him to Rome to serve as their counselor. During his time in the papal court, Humilis offered wise advice and guidance to the two pontiffs, aiding them in their governance of the Church. His humility and simplicity of heart were truly striking, as he never sought recognition or worldly honors for his service. After fulfilling his mission in Rome, Humilis returned to his beloved Bisignano, where he continued to live a life of piety and virtue. He dedicated himself to serving the poor and marginalized, offering them compassion, material assistance, and most importantly, spiritual consolation. His love for God was evident in his selfless actions and unwavering devotion to those in need. Saint Humilis of Bisignano passed away on November 26, 1637, in Bisignano, Italy, at the age of 55. His death was a peaceful one, attributed to natural causes. The extraordinary holiness of his life became widely recognized, leading to his veneration by the Catholic Church. On October 4, 1780, Pope Pius VI issued a decree recognizing the heroic virtues of Humilis, thus declaring him venerable. His reputation continued to grow, and on January 29, 1882, Pope Leo XIII beatified him, officially acknowledging his blessed state in Heaven. Finally, on May 19, 2002, Pope John Paul II canonized Humilis of Bisignano, declaring him a saint of the Catholic Church. As a canonized saint, he serves as an example and intercessor for the faithful, particularly those in Bisignano, Italy, where he is venerated as the patron saint.
