Saint Jacinta Marto, also known as simply "Jacinta," was a young visionary who experienced the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. Born on March 11, 1910, in Aljustrel, Santarém, Portugal, Jacinta became a prominent figure and witness to the miraculous events that occurred in Fatima. At the age of just seven, Jacinta and her cousin Lucia dos Santos, along with her older brother Francisco Marto, experienced the first of a series of apparitions from the Blessed Virgin Mary on May 13, 1917. These extraordinary encounters would continue for several months, with the final apparition occurring on October 13, 1917. During the apparitions, Our Lady revealed to the three children the importance of prayer, penance, and the salvation of souls. Jacinta, being the youngest of the visionaries, was particularly affected by the visions and messages. She was deeply moved by the suffering of sinners and willingly made sacrifices in reparation for their conversion and salvation. As the youngest visionary, Jacinta's innocence and tender heart left a profound impact on those who witnessed her devotion. She often prayed for sinners fervently, believing that through her prayers and sacrifices, she could help bring them closer to God. Jacinta even made the heroic decision to offer her life as a victim soul for the salvation of others. After the conclusion of the apparitions, Jacinta's life would be marked by physical and spiritual challenges. She faced ridicule and skepticism from those who doubted the authenticity of the Fatima events. Despite this, Jacinta remained steadfast in her faith and took to heart the message of love and conversion brought by Our Lady. Tragically, Jacinta fell seriously ill during the influenza pandemic that swept through Europe in 1918. She suffered greatly and, realizing her impending death, continued to offer her sufferings for the conversion of sinners. Jacinta passed away on February 20, 1920, in Lisbon, Portugal, at the age of nine. Jacinta's sanctity and virtue were widely recognized, and her cause for beatification and canonization was initiated. On May 13, 1989, Pope John Paul II declared her venerable, recognizing her heroic virtues. She was beatified on May 13, 2000, during the Jubilee Year celebrations, and finally, on May 13, 2017, Pope Francis canonized her as a saint of the Catholic Church. Saint Jacinta Marto is remembered as a model of childlike faith, deep compassion for sinners, and unwavering dedication to the message delivered at Fatima. She is often invoked as a patron saint for bodily ills, captives, people ridiculed for their piety, prisoners, the sick, and sickness. Her life continues to inspire countless believers to seek spiritual conversion and lead lives of prayer and sacrifice for the sake of others.
