Biography
Saint Jerome Hermosilla, a Dominican priest and missionary, dedicated his life to evangelizing in Asia during the 19th century. Born in Spain, his early vocation led him to serve as a missionary in Manila, Philippines, before undertaking a significant mission to Vietnam in 1828. His exceptional service and leadership earned him the appointment as Vicar Apostolic of Eastern Tonkin, Vietnam, and titular bishop of Miletopolis on 2 August 1839. In this role, he worked closely with the local catechist Saint Joseph Khang, fostering the nascent Church community amidst challenging conditions. Bishop Hermosilla remained steadfast in his pastoral duties, guiding the faithful through periods of persecution. On 19 February 1861, he was martyred alongside Saint Valentin Faustino Berri Ochoa, a fellow priest, in Hanoi, Vietnam, for his unwavering faith and commitment to the Gospel. His martyrdom, witnessed by the local Christian community, became a profound testament to his courage. Though not designated as a patron saint, Saint Jerome Hermosilla’s legacy endures as a symbol of missionary sacrifice and fidelity in the face of death. His life and witness were recognized by the Church, affirming his sanctity through his martyrdom for the faith.
