Feast Day: January 28
Death: January 1, 28
Saint Jerome Lu, also known as Hieronymus Lu Tingmei, Jerome Lou-Tin-Mei, and Lu Tingmei Hieronymus, was a layman catechist and one of the Martyrs of China. Born around 1811 in Langdai, Guizhou, China, he lived during a period of intense persecution against Christians in the country. Jerome Lu dedicated himself to spreading and defending the Catholic faith, imparting catechesis to fellow believers and serving as a pillar of strength during a time of great adversity. Despite the risks involved, he fearlessly embraced his role as a catechist, openly teaching and guiding his fellow Christians in their faith. During the Qing Dynasty, the Chinese government initiated several campaigns against foreign influences, including Christianity. This resulted in the persecution of many Christian believers, who were seen as threats to the stability of the country. Jerome Lu faced numerous challenges and dangers as a result of his dedication to the Catholic faith. Ultimately, on 28 January 1858, Jerome Lu was arrested and subjected to severe torture for refusing to renounce his beliefs. He remained steadfast in his faith and refused to renounce his commitment to Christ until the very end. Tragically, he was eventually beheaded in Mao-Cheu, Langdai, Guizhou, China. The Catholic Church recognized Saint Jerome Lu's martyrdom, acknowledging his unwavering faith and the sacrifice he made for the Gospel. On 2 August 1908, Pope Saint Pius X issued a decree of martyrdom, thereby declaring Jerome Lu venerable. Subsequently, on 2 May 1909, Pope Saint Pius X beatified him, formally recognizing him as a blessed. Finally, on 1 October 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Jerome Lu, officially including him in the list of saints recognized by the Catholic Church. This canonization served as an affirmation of Jerome Lu's sanctity and his status as a role model for Catholics around the world. Although Saint Jerome Lu does not have a specific patronage attributed to him, his life and martyrdom serve as a source of inspiration and encouragement for all Christians, reminding them of the importance of faith even in the face of persecution. His feast day is celebrated on 28 January and 28 September, as he is honored as one of the Martyrs of China.
