Biography

Saint Joseph Marello, also known as Giuseppe Marello, was born on 26 December 1844 in Turin, Italy. He was the son of Vincenzo and Anna Maria Marello. Tragically, Joseph's mother passed away when he was very young, and as a result, the family relocated from Turin to Santi Martino Alfieri. At the young age of 12, Joseph entered the seminary, displaying a profound devotion to his faith. However, at 19, he contracted typhus, a severe illness that posed a considerable threat to his life. In his desperation, Joseph promised Our Lady that if he survived, he would persevere with his studies and ultimately become ordained. Miraculously, he recovered from the illness and attributed his cure to Our Lady of Consolation. Keeping his promise, Joseph continued his studies, and on 19 September 1868, he was ordained a priest. Following his ordination, he worked as a secretary to Bishop Carlo Savio in Asti, Italy for 13 years. During this time, he attended the First Vatican Council in 1869 and 1870, accompanying Bishop Savio. Joseph's dedication to serving others led him to take over a retirement home in Asti that was facing bankruptcy. Through his efforts, he saved the facility, ensuring that the elderly residents could continue to receive care and support. Additionally, he served as a spiritual director and catechist in his diocese, providing guidance and education to those under his care. In 1878, Joseph founded the Oblates of Saint Joseph, a religious congregation committed to caring for the poor, educating the young, and assisting bishops as needed. This congregation became an embodiment of Joseph's mission to spread love and compassion among those who were most vulnerable in society. Recognizing his exceptional leadership and dedication to the faith, Joseph was appointed Bishop of Acqui, Italy on 17 February 1889. As a bishop, he diligently visited all the parishes in his diocese and wrote six pastoral letters to guide and inspire his flock. Tragically, Joseph's life was cut short while he was participating in a celebration of the 3rd centennial of Saint Philip Neri. On 30 May 1895, he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and passed away in Savona, Italy. Saint Joseph Marello was venerated on 12 June 1978 by Pope Paul VI, who recognized his heroic virtues. He was later beatified by Pope John Paul II on 26 September 1993 at Campo del Palio, Asti, Italy, and finally canonized on 25 November 2001 by Pope John Paul II. Though Saint Joseph Marello's specific patronages are not mentioned, his life serves as an inspiration to all Christians, reminding us of the importance of selflessness, devotion, and a deep commitment to serving those in need. His dedication to the poor and his tireless efforts as a bishop exemplify his unwavering faith and love for God and his fellow men.
