Death: January 1, 28
Saint Lawrence Wang, also known as Lawrence Ouang and Lawrence Wang Bing, was a layman catechist in the apostolic vicariate of Guizhou in China. He is recognized as one of the Martyrs of China for his unwavering faith and dedication to spreading the Catholic faith. Lawrence Wang was born around 1802 in Yuyang, Guizhou, China. Little is known about his early life, but he grew up in a region where Catholicism faced immense persecution. Despite the risks involved, Lawrence felt a calling to serve the Church and became actively involved in catechizing and instructing others in the Catholic faith. During the mid-19th century, the oppression of Christians in China intensified. The Qing Dynasty imposed strict regulations and harsh penalties on those who practiced Catholicism. Despite these challenges, Lawrence Wang, along with his fellow Catholics, remained steadfast and continued their mission of spreading the Gospel. On January 28, 1858, Lawrence Wang was captured by Chinese authorities in Maokou, Langdai County, Guizhou. He was later beheaded for his refusal to renounce his faith. This act of martyrdom was a testament to his unwavering dedication and love for Christ. In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Saint Pius X declared Lawrence Wang's veneration on August 2, 1908, with a decree of martyrdom. Just a year later, on May 2, 1909, he was beatified by Pope Saint Pius X. Finally, on October 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized him as a saint, recognizing his sanctity and the example he set for all Catholics. Saint Lawrence Wang is venerated as a martyr and a hero of the Catholic faith in China. As a layman catechist, he played a vital role in the evangelization of his country. His life serves as an inspiration to Catholic laypeople, reminding them of their mission to spread the Gospel and to stand firm in their faith, even in the face of adversity. While Saint Lawrence Wang is not associated with any particular patronage, his life and martyrdom serve as an example of the courage and dedication required to live out the Christian faith. His feast days are celebrated on January 28 and September 28, alongside the other Martyrs of China, commemorating their sacrifice and enduring legacy in the Catholic Church.
