Biography

Saint Louise de Marillac, also known as Louise de Marillac Le Gras, was born on August 12, 1591, in Meux, France. From a young age, she felt called to religious life but was unable to find a convent that would accept her due to her ill health. Instead, she married Antony LeGras, an official to the queen, in 1611. Tragedy struck when Louise became a widow in 1625. Left with a young son to care for, she continued to search for her vocation. During this time, she encountered Saint Vincent de Paul, who became her spiritual guide and mentor. Under his guidance, she eventually discovered her calling to serve the poor and marginalized. In 1642, together with Saint Vincent, Louise founded the Daughters of Charity. This religious community was dedicated to providing practical care and assistance to those in need, particularly in hospitals and orphanages. The Daughters of Charity received Vatican approval in 1655, acknowledging the order's significant impact and work. Louise de Marillac also established the Sisters of Charity and took her own vows in the order. She served as the superior of the Sisters of Charity until her death. Her dedication and leadership helped the order grow and spread its mission of serving the poor, sick, and marginalized. Throughout her life, Louise de Marillac not only cared for the physical needs of those she served but also attended to their spiritual well-being. She acted as a guide and mentor for groups of lay women, providing them with spiritual support and guidance in their daily lives. Saint Louise de Marillac's feast days are celebrated on March 15 and, on some calendars, May 9. She is also known for her patronage of disappointing children, those who have lost their parents, people rejected by religious orders, sick individuals, social workers, the Vincentian Service Corps, and widows. Pope John XXIII proclaimed her as the patron of social workers on February 12, 1960. Saint Louise de Marillac passed away on March 15, 1660, in Paris, France, from natural causes. Her body, considered incorrupt, remains a testament to her holiness. She was beatified on May 9, 1920, by Pope Benedict XV and canonized on March 11, 1934, by Pope Pius XI. Her life and legacy continue to inspire many to serve the poor and those in need with love and compassion.
