Biography

Saint Luigi Orione, also known as Aloysius Orione, was born on June 23, 1872, in Pontecurone, Alessandria, Italy. He joined the Franciscans at Voghera, Italy, as a young man, demonstrating his early vocation in religious life. However, he developed severe health problems and was forced to return to his family. Undeterred by his health challenges, Luigi continued his theological studies. He had the privilege of studying under the renowned Saint John Bosco in Turin, Italy. Luigi was actually present at Saint John's death and, miraculously, during Saint John's funeral, Luigi was completely cured of his previous illness, thus witnessing a profound moment of divine intervention. After his miraculous healing, Luigi pursued his religious calling with renewed zeal. He studied at the seminary in Tortona, Italy, and while still a layman and a student, he opened San Luigi House at San Bernardino in 1893. This home served as a refuge for the poor, homeless, and abandoned, reflecting Luigi's deep commitment to the marginalized and vulnerable. On April 13, 1895, Luigi was ordained into the priesthood, further deepening his ability to serve those in need. Inspired by his faith and guided by his passion for social justice, Luigi founded several religious congregations and institutions. In 1899, he established the Hermits of Divine Providence congregation, the Ladies of Divine Providence, and an orphanage in Rome, Italy, with the support and patronage of Pope Saint Pius X. During his lifetime, Luigi also founded the Little Missionaries of Charity, a religious order devoted to serving the poor and the sick. His tireless efforts and commitment to these different vocations led him to travel extensively. Luigi journeyed around the world, visiting homes and communities associated with his congregations in places such as Wales, Brazil, the United States, and throughout Italy. Luigi's dedication to serving others also extended to the spiritual realm. He constructed the Marian shrine at Tortona, which became a significant site for pilgrims seeking solace and support during times of political unrest. This shrine served as a beacon of hope and a place of spiritual refuge for countless individuals. On March 12, 1940, Luigi Orione passed away in San Remo, Imperia, Italy, due to heart disease. Remarkably, when his body was exhumed in 1965, it was found to be intact, a testament to his holiness. He was interred at the shrine of Our Lady of Safe Keeping in Tortona, Italy, where his memory and legacy continue to be cherished. Luigi Orione's virtuous life and unwavering commitment to the poor earned him veneration from the Catholic Church. On February 5, 1978, Pope Paul VI issued a decree acknowledging Luigi Orione's heroic virtues. Later, on October 26, 1980, Pope John Paul II beatified him. Finally, on May 16, 2004, Pope John Paul II canonized Luigi Orione, recognizing him as a saint, an exemplary model of Christian charity, and a source of inspiration for all.
