Biography

Saint Martha of Persia, also known as Martha of Rome, was born into a noble family in Persia. She lived during a time when Christianity was oppressed, but despite the risks involved, she converted to Christianity along with her husband, Saint Maris. The couple's faith was strong, and they raised their two sons, Saint Audifax and Saint Abachum, in the Christian tradition. During the persecutions under Emperor Aurelian, Saint Martha and her family faced severe hardships. Despite the dangers, they refused to renounce their faith and remained committed to their Christian beliefs. Their steadfastness and devotion to God earned them the crown of martyrdom. In the year 270, Saint Martha, Saint Maris, Saint Audifax, and Saint Abachum were captured amid the persecutions and brought to Rome, Italy. It is believed that they were drowned in the waters of Saint Ninfa, located approximately 13 miles from Rome. Their martyrdom occurred as a result of their unwavering faith, even in the face of persecution and death. For many years, the location of their relics remained unknown until 1590 when they were discovered in Rome. Their remains were recognized as those of Saint Martha, Saint Maris, Saint Audifax, and Saint Abachum, affirming their status as true martyrs of the faith. Although there is limited information regarding the representation of Saint Martha of Persia, her life and martyrdom serve as an inspiration to all believers. Her story highlights the importance of remaining faithful to one's beliefs, even in the most challenging circumstances. Saint Martha of Persia is celebrated and honored as a martyr within the Catholic Church. Her feast day is observed on January 19th, with the Jerusalem martyrology marking it on January 16th. She was canonized as a saint before the formal establishment of the Catholic Church's Congregation for the Causes of Saints, thus making her a pre-congregation saint. Saint Martha of Persia is particularly venerated and acknowledged as the patron saint of Caselette, Italy. Her intercession is sought by the faithful of this region, who turn to her for spiritual guidance, protection, and perseverance in their faith.
