Biography

Saint Nereus of Terracina, also known as Saint Nereus, was a courageous follower of Christ and a Roman soldier who is revered as a martyr in the Catholic Church. While there is limited information available about his early life and background, his story exemplifies the unwavering faith and dedication to Christ that many early Christians exhibited. Nereus served as a soldier in the imperial Roman army and was a member of the prestigious Praetorian Guard. As a soldier, he may have witnessed or even participated in the persecution of Christians during the reign of Emperor Domitian. However, his encounter with the Apostle Peter turned his life around and led him to convert to Christianity. Tradition holds that Nereus was baptized by Saint Peter himself, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. As a result of his conversion, Nereus faced severe persecution for his faith. Along with his brother in Christ, Saint Achilleus, Nereus was exiled to the island of Pontia for refusing to deny his Christian beliefs. On this island, they suffered alongside another saint, Flavia Domitilla, who was related to Emperor Domitian. The three individuals provided support and strength to each other during this challenging time. Despite enduring exile and hardship, Nereus remained steadfast in his faith and refused to renounce Christ. Eventually, Nereus, Achilleus, and Domitilla were martyred in the year 98 on the Ardeatine road outside Rome, Italy. According to historical accounts, they were beheaded for their unwavering devotion to Christianity. Although the representation of Saint Nereus is not widely known, his memory and sacrifice have been honored for centuries. He is venerated as a pre-congregation saint, which means his canonization occurred before there was an official process of canonization in place in the Catholic Church. The feast day of Saint Nereus and his brother Achilleus is celebrated on May 12th annually.
