Biography

Saint Owen, also known as Ouini or Owin, was a devout and dedicated servant of God in early medieval England. He is best known for his roles as a steward in the household of Saint Etheldreda, a monk in Lastingham and Lichfield, and a spiritual student of Saint Chad. Though not much is known about his life, the impact he had on the people of his time and his commitment to his faith are evident. Born in the 7th century, Saint Owen entered the service of Saint Etheldreda, who was the founder and abbess of a renowned double monastery in Ely. As a steward in her household, he was entrusted with the responsibility of managing the affairs of the monastery, ensuring its proper functioning, and attending to the needs of the community. It was during his time in Ely that he deepened his spiritual journey, drawing inspiration from the holy atmosphere and the devout men and women around him. Seeking to further his pursuit of religious life, Saint Owen eventually left Ely and became a monk. He first joined the monastic community in Lastingham, a village in North Yorkshire, known for its association with Saint Cedd, the founding abbot of the monastery. Imbued with a fervent spirit and a desire to grow in holiness, Saint Owen immersed himself in prayer, contemplation, and the rigorous monastic practices of his time. After spending a considerable period in Lastingham, Saint Owen's spiritual journey led him to the area of Lichfield, famous for its medieval cathedral and its rich Christian heritage. There, he joined another monastic community, where he continued his ascetical practices and enhanced his knowledge of the faith under the guidance of Saint Chad. Saint Chad, who had been appointed as the Bishop of Mercia, was known for his profound spirituality, humility, and dedication to the service of God. Under the tutelage of this renowned saint, Saint Owen grew in wisdom and deepened his understanding of the Christian faith. Although the details surrounding his daily life and specific accomplishments are scarce, it is known that Saint Owen lived a life of extraordinary piety and devotion to God. His commitment to prayer, contemplation, and self-discipline endeared him to his fellow monks and inspired many to follow his example. Saint Owen's earthly journey came to an end around the year 680, as he peacefully passed away of natural causes. Recognizing his unwavering faith and exemplary life, the Church acknowledged his sanctity, and he was canonized as a saint. However, due to the lack of sufficient historical records, his canonization took place before the official establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, making him a pre-congregation saint. While no specific patronages have been attributed to Saint Owen, his life of devotion serves as an inspiration for all believers, especially those pursuing a path of monastic or religious dedication. His example encourages individuals to seek holiness in their daily lives, to deepen their prayer life, and to follow the guidance of spiritual mentors. Saint Owen reminds us that even when details about someone's life are scarce, true sanctity can still be recognized and celebrated.
