Biography

Saint Phêrô Ða, also known as Peter Da or Peter Dja, was a married layman and devout Catholic in the apostolic vicariate of Central Tonkin, which is now part of modern Vietnam. Born around 1802 in Ngoc Cuc, Nam Ðinh, Vietnam, he lived and worked as a carpenter in his local community. In addition to his trade, Phêrô served as a sacristan at his parish, demonstrating his deep commitment to the Catholic faith. During this period, Vietnam faced religious persecution under the reign of Emperor Tu Duc. The emperor sought to suppress Christianity and eradicate its influence in the country. Phêrô, steadfast in his faith, became a target of this persecution. He was captured, imprisoned, and subjected to severe tortures due to his refusal to renounce his Christian beliefs. Despite the suffering he endured, Phêrô remained resolute and unwavering in his devotion to God. On 17 June 1862, in Nam Ðinh, Vietnam, he was ultimately martyred by being burned at the stake. The manner of his death exemplifies his unwavering faith and commitment to God's truth, even in the face of extreme persecution. Phêrô Ða's martyrdom did not go unnoticed by the Catholic Church. Recognizing his extraordinary witness to the faith, Pope Pius XII issued a decree of martyrdom on 11 February 1951, officially declaring him venerable. Just a few months later, on 29 April 1951, Pope Pius XII beatified Phêrô, elevating him to the rank of blessed. The recognition of Phêrô's holiness continued to grow, and on 19 June 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized him as a saint. His canonization affirmed his sanctity and the impact of his martyrdom on the Church and the faithful in Vietnam. As a saint, Phêrô Ða does not have a specific patronage associated with him. However, his witness of unwavering faith and martyrdom serves as an inspiration to all Christians, especially those facing persecution and difficulties in practicing their faith. The feast day of Saint Phêrô Ða is celebrated on 17 June, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. On this day, Catholics around the world honor his memory and seek his intercession for strength and courage in their own journey of faith. Saint Phêrô Ða stands as a remarkable example of Christian virtue, reminding us of the sacrifices made by our ancestors in faith and encouraging us to stand firm in our beliefs no matter the circumstances.
