Feast Day: June 21
Saint Raymond of Barbastro, also known as Raymond of Roda, Raymond of Roda-Barbastro, Ramon II, and Raimondo, was an Augustinian canon regular who made significant contributions to the Catholic Church during his lifetime. He was born in Durban-sur-Arize in the diocese of Toulouse, France, but later became closely associated with the city of Barbastro in Aragon, Spain. Raymond initially served as an Augustinian canon regular at the monastery of Saint-Antonin de Frédélas in Pamiers, France. His exceptional dedication and commitment to his religious vocation allowed him to rise to the position of prior of the monastery of Saint-Sernin in Toulouse, France. In 1104, Raymond was appointed as the bishop of Barbastro, a diocese in Aragon, Spain. He was known for his unwavering faith and tireless efforts to cultivate the Catholic faith in his diocese. He demonstrated immense zeal for his pastoral duties by constantly traveling to visit parishes, caring for his priests, and encouraging the laity to deepen their faith. One notable aspect of Raymond's character was his simplicity and humility in living. Despite his high position in the church hierarchy, he shunned lavish living and instead embraced a life of poverty. Furthermore, he was renowned for his generous charitable works, always ready to assist those in need. His acts of charity and compassion endeared him to many within his diocese. However, Saint Raymond's advocacy for peace and his firm opposition to the use of Christian armies against the foes of Christendom brought him into conflict with certain individuals. His sermons and teachings against the violence perpetuated by Christians led to his forced exile from 1116 to 1119. Despite this setback, Raymond stood firm in his convictions and continued to advocate for peace within the church. Saint Raymond of Barbastro died in 1126 in Barbastro, Spain, from natural causes. His burial took place in objects from his bishopric, which are preserved in Roda de Isábena, Huesca, Spain. He is honored as the patron saint of the city of Barbastro and the diocese of Barbastro, Spain. The life of Saint Raymond of Barbastro serves as an inspiration for all Catholics to live a life of simplicity, charity, and unwavering faith. His commitment to peace in difficult times and his compassion for those in need make him a revered figure in the Catholic Church.
