Biography

Saint Rainerio of Split, also known as Rainerio of Cagli, was a Camaldolese monk and bishop of Cagli, Italy in the year 1154. Born in unknown circumstances, he dedicated his life to serving God and the Church, ultimately sacrificing his life for defending the rights of the Church against civil authorities. As a Camaldolese monk, Rainerio embraced a life of solitude and prayer. The Camaldolese Order, founded by Saint Romuald in the 11th century, emphasized contemplation and hermit-like living, with some monks choosing to live in seclusion in their cells while others served as hermits. Rainerio's dedication to spiritual enlightenment and a life of prayer prepared him for the religious leadership he would undertake. In 1154, Rainerio was appointed as the bishop of Cagli, a city located in Italy. His appointment as a bishop marked an important milestone in his spiritual journey, giving him the opportunity to carry out his responsibilities in guiding the faithful and defending the Church. Rainerio proved to be a faithful and committed bishop, working tirelessly to spread the teachings of the Catholic faith and serve the people under his care. However, during his time as bishop, Rainerio faced immense challenges in defending the rights of the Church against civil authorities. He firmly believed in the autonomy and independence of the Church, and he actively opposed any encroachments on its authority. Rainerio fearlessly defended the Church's rights, even at great personal risk. Sadly, Rainerio's commitment to the Church and his unwavering defense of its rights would ultimately cost him his life. In 1180, while in Split, Dalmatia (modern-day Croatia), Rainerio was stoned to death by Slovenians. He died as a martyr for his faithful and courageous defense of the rights of the Church against civil authorities. Rainerio's martyrdom left a lasting impact on the Catholic community. His unwavering dedication to the Church, his sacrifice, and his willingness to lay down his life in defense of the faith have made him a revered figure. His example of fidelity to the Church and steadfastness in the face of persecution continue to inspire believers to this day. Recognizing his sanctity and the example he set through his martyrdom, Rainerio was canonized as a saint, although the exact date of his canonization is unknown due to it occurring before the formalization of the canonization process. Nevertheless, Saint Rainerio of Split is venerated as a patron saint of Cagli, Italy, both the city and its diocese, as well as the archdiocese of Split, Croatia. His feast day is celebrated on August 4th, a day that serves as a remembrance of his steadfast commitment to the Church and his ultimate sacrifice for the faith.
