Biography

Saint Rigobert of Rheims, also known as Gobert, Rigobertus, or Robert, was a renowned Benedictine monk, abbot, and archbishop of Rheims, France. Born in the 7th century, the exact year of his birth remains unknown. However, it is believed that he became one of the most venerated saints in his lifetime. Saint Rigobert began his religious journey as a Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Orbais. His piety, devotion, and exceptional intellect quickly gained him recognition within the monastic community. Due to his qualities as a leader and his commitment to the faith, he was eventually appointed as the abbot of Orbais. However, Saint Rigobert's life took a tumultuous turn when he was persecuted and exiled by Charles Martel, the renowned Frankish military leader. During his exile, another individual was appointed as the bishop of Rheims, the position Saint Rigobert previously held. Though eventually allowed to return to his see, the saint made a noble decision to prevent any scandal or dissension among the faithful. Instead of attempting to reclaim his bishopric, Saint Rigobert chose to spend the rest of his days as a hermit. He secluded himself from the main Christian community, dedicating his time to spiritual pursuits, prayer, and contemplation. His years as a hermit were marked by unwavering patience and unwavering devotion to God. Throughout his life, Saint Rigobert was known for his virtuous character and his ability to perform miracles. He became widely respected among the people, who sought his intercession and guidance in times of need. Many believed that his prayers had miraculous healing powers, and his reputation as a miracle worker spread far and wide. Saint Rigobert of Rheims passed away peacefully around the year 750 in Rheims, France, due to natural causes. His death marked the end of a life dedicated to humility, faith, and devotion to God. In recognition of his exemplary life, Saint Rigobert was canonized as a saint in the Catholic Church. While his patronage is not officially recognized, he continues to inspire the faithful through his virtues of patience, devotion, and his reputation as a miracle worker. Saint Rigobert's feast days are celebrated on January 4th and June 14th. The latter date commemorates the translation of his relics. As a Pre-Congregation saint, his canonization predates the formal process established by the Catholic Church in later years.
