Biography

Saint Stephen Du Bourg, a devoted canon of Saint Rufus’s Abbey at Valence, France, dedicated his life to monastic reform and contemplative service. Joining Saint Bruno in the foundational years of the Grande Chartreuse in the early 12th century, he shared in the spiritual vision that established the Carthusian Order. His profound commitment to the eremitic ideal led him to found the Charterhouse of Meyria in 1116, a significant outpost of Carthusian life in the region. There, he established a community devoted to prayer, silence, and manual labor, embodying the Carthusian ethos of solitude and communal harmony. Though the precise date of his death remains unrecorded in historical accounts, Saint Stephen Du Bourg’s legacy endures through the enduring monastic community he established at Meyria.

His life exemplified the Carthusian vocation of seeking God in the depths of solitude while contributing to the spiritual renewal of the Church through the founding of new monastic houses. As a companion of Saint Bruno and the founder of Meyria, he remains a pivotal figure in the early history of the Carthusian Order, remembered for his humility, perseverance, and unwavering dedication to the contemplative life.
