Feast Day: April 28
Saint Ursicinus of Ravenna, also known as Ursicinus of Ravenna, was a respected physician who lived in the city of Ravenna, Italy, during the first century. Not much is known about his early life, but his exceptional medical skills and dedication to his profession earned him great admiration among the people of Ravenna. During the reign of Emperor Nero, Christianity was perceived as a threat to the pagan Roman Empire. Christians were often persecuted and forced to renounce their faith under the penalty of death. Saint Ursicinus found himself caught in the midst of this turmoil when it was discovered that he was a secret follower of Jesus Christ. As news of his Christian beliefs reached the authorities, Saint Ursicinus was arrested and put on trial. Before his sentencing, he wavered in his commitment to his faith, grappling with the immense pressure surrounding him. However, in a crucial turning point, he had a profound conversation with Saint Vitalis, who is said to have encouraged and strengthened Ursicinus' resolve to remain faithful to Christianity until the end. Inspired by this encounter, Saint Ursicinus bravely stood before his accusers and refused to renounce his Christian beliefs. Despite the imminent threat of death, he remained steadfast in his commitment to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Consequently, he was sentenced to be executed by beheading. On the day of his martyrdom, which is believed to have taken place around 67 AD, Saint Ursicinus faced his fate with remarkable courage and faith. By embracing death rather than renouncing his devotion to Christianity, he became a symbol of unwavering faith and dedication to God. Although not much is known about the physical representation or particular patronage associated with Saint Ursicinus, his name is remembered and honored in the Catholic Church. He has been venerated as a saint since ancient times, even prior to the establishment of official canonization processes. As a pre-congregation saint, his sainthood was recognized based on the popular acclaim and widespread devotion to his memory. To commemorate his life and sacrifice, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of Saint Ursicinus of Ravenna on the 28th of April. Some calendars also recognize an alternate feast day on the 16th of June. These occasions provide an opportunity for believers to reflect on his example and seek inspiration from his unwavering faith in the face of persecution and death.
