Biography

Blessed Alejo Pan López, also known as Ambrosio of Santibáñez, was a Franciscan Capuchin priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He is venerated in the Catholic Church for his steadfast faith and devotion to the Gospel.

Born on 24 October 1888 in Santibáñez de la Isla, Léon, Spain, Alejo Pan López entered the Capuchin Order and was ordained a priest. He dedicated his life to serving God and his fellowmen, exemplifying the virtues of charity, humility, and selflessness.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Father Ambrosio faced immense challenges as he sought to stay true to his spiritual calling amidst the violent persecution of the Catholic Church. Despite the dangers, he continued to minister to the spiritual needs of the faithful, providing them with solace, guidance, and the sacraments.

Tragically, on 27 December 1936, in the midst of this persecution, Father Ambrosio was captured in Santander, Cantabria, Spain, and martyred for his unwavering faith. With steadfast courage, he embraced his martyrdom, remaining faithful to Jesus Christ until the end.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Father Ambrosio was venerated by Pope Francis on 27 March 2013, when he declared the decree of martyrdom. The beatification ceremony took place on 13 October 2013, joyfully elevating him to the rank of Blessed.
