Biography

Blessed Andrés Gómez Sáez, also known as Andonis, was born on 7 May 1894 in Bicorp, Valencia, Spain. He became a member of the Salesians, a religious congregation founded by Saint John Bosco, dedicated to the education and spiritual formation of young people. Andrés took his vows at Carabanchel Alto, Madrid, Spain on 28 July 1914, committing himself to a life of service to God and others.

After completing his studies, Andrés was ordained as a Catholic priest in Orense, Spain on 9 September 1925. Known for his gentle and compassionate spirit, he served as a parish priest in Baracaldo, La Coruña, and Santander, Spain. In these roles, he dedicated himself to the spiritual care of his parishioners, guiding and assisting them in their journey of faith.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Andrés was arrested by militia troops for the crime of priesthood. On 1 January 1937, he was executed by being shot in Santander, Cantabria, Spain, bravely embracing martyrdom for his unwavering commitment to his vocation and faith in God.

Andrés Gómez Sáez's unwavering dedication to his ministry and the suffering he endured have made him a revered figure in the Catholic Church. Recognizing his martyrdom, Pope Benedict XVI declared him venerable on 26 June 2006, signifying that Andrés's life and death were exemplary of heroic virtue and offered as a model to inspire the faithful.

Later, on 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Andrés Gómez Sáez, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed." This beatification highlights Andrés's sanctity, confirming that his virtuous life and sacrificial death are worthy of veneration and that he can intercede on behalf of those who seek his help.

Blessed Andrés Gómez Sáez's legacy serves as a reminder of the persecution faced by many Catholic priests during the Spanish Civil War and inspires believers to stand firm in their faith, even in the face of adversity. His feast day is celebrated on 1 January, the day he was martyred, allowing the faithful to honor and seek his intercession on this special occasion.
