Biography

Blessed Benigna Cardoso Da Silva was born on October 15, 1928, in Sítio Oitis, Santana do Cariri, Ceará, Brazil. She was the youngest of four children born to José Cardoso da Silva and Thereza Maria da Silva. Tragically, Benigna's father passed away before she was born, and her mother died when she was just a year old. Consequently, she and her brother were taken in and raised by another family.

From an early age, Benigna demonstrated a remarkable piety and a deep commitment to helping others. She exemplified these qualities both at home and at school. Benigna was known for being a diligent student and always willing to lend a hand in various tasks. Her compassionate nature led her to intervene whenever she witnessed acts of cruelty or destruction among her peers. She would often be brought to tears whenever a classmate was subjected to punishment.

Tragically, Benigna's life was cut short at the tender age of thirteen when she became a victim of a horrifying crime. On October 24, 1941, in Sítio Oitis, Santana do Cariri, she was attacked by a man named Raimundo "Raul" Alves Ribeiro, who attempted to rape her. Displaying immense courage and a fierce commitment to preserving her chastity, Benigna fought off her assailant. In the struggle, she was brutally beaten and slashed with a machete. Her unyielding resistance and steadfast commitment to preserving her purity earned her the title of martyr to chastity.

Blessed Benigna Cardoso Da Silva was laid to rest in the São Miguel Cemetery in Ceará. However, on May 26, 2012, her remains were re-interred at the parish church of Senhora Sant¬¥Ana in Ceará. In recognition of her martyrdom, Pope Francis venerated her on October 2, 2019, with a decree of martyrdom. On October 24, 2022, Pope Francis beatified Benigna Cardoso Da Silva, celebrating her beatification at the Square of the Cathedral of Nossa Senhora da Penha in Crato, Brazil. The ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Leonardo Ulrich Steiner.
